Gloria L.
Mugno, RN, BSN, MS,
has been
Director of Nursing
Education
at AHEC-SW and a Clinical Instructor at the UAMS College of
Nursing since 1989. She attended Southern Methodist
University and is a 1961 graduate of the Methodist Hospital
of Dallas School of Nursing, where she received the
Salutatorian Medal. Ms. Mugno earned her BSN at the
University of Texas at Arlington and her MS degree at Texas
A & M University – Texarkana.
She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor
Society of Nursing, Delta Theta and Gamma Xi Chapters and
has served as VP of both Chapters. Ms. Mugno is a 1998
recipient of the: Distinguished Alumna Award, Texas A & M
University – Texarkana; YWCA Tribute to Women Education
Award; Exceptional Leadership Award, Arkansas Nurses
Association; Nurse of the Year Award, Arkansas Nurses
Association, District 3; Pauline L. Barns Excellence in
Nursing Award; and was nominated for a Wilbur Award in
Education. She is also the recipient of the American
National Red Cross Nurses Pin for services rendered over the
years. Ms. Mugno is Past President of the Board of Directors
of Hospice of Texarkana, Women for the Arts, Texarkana
Jaycee-Ettes and the St. James Parents Club.
Her board service has included Board of Directors of Wadley
Regional Medical Center Foundation, Junior League of
Texarkana, Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council,
Arkansas Nurses Association, Lake Country AHEC and the
Opportunities, Inc. Foundation Board. Prior to accepting the
position at AHEC-SW, she was an Assistant Professor of
Nursing at Texarkana College from 1970 – 1984 and was the
founding Coordinator of the UAMS Off-Campus BSN Program at
UACCH, Hope, AR in 1999.
Her areas of clinical practice have been primarily in Adult
Health/ Medical-Surgical Nursing. She began the first
support group for Fibromyalgia patients in Southwest
Arkansas and Northeast Texas and co-authored the following
article: Hodges, L.C., Smith-Rooker, J.L. and Mugno, G.L.
(2002), April).

Sondra
Bedwell, MNSc, APN, FNP-C,
joined the Nursing Education Department on July 1, 2003 as a
Clinical Instructor for the UAMS College of Nursing and a
Family Nurse Practitioner working 50% in the AHEC Faculty
Clinic. She holds a B.S. degree in Biology from Bethel
College, McKenzie, Tennessee; a BSN for Murray State
University; Murray, Kentucky; and a MNSc as a Family Nurse
Practitioner from the University of Arkansas for Medical
Sciences.
She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor
Society of Nursing and is a Board Certified FNP. Prior to
joining the AHEC team, Ms. Bedwell was Coordinator of the
Susan G. Komen Funded Breast Health Awareness Program at
Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Texas.
During that time she also worked part-time as a Nurse
Practitioner in a Surgical Oncology Practice and clinic
setting. For seven years she was a Manager, Coordinator and
Staff RN at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System, Texarkana,
Texas, where she managed the float pool and functioned as
House Supervisor. She provided direct care on the following
units; Pediatrics, Women’s Health, Respiratory and Oncology.

Phyllis A.
Lewis, Administrative Assistant,
has worked for the Nursing Education Department since 1995
and earned a Certificate in Office Careers at Texarkana
College in 1994.
She moved to Texarkana with her daughter, Casey, from
Dallas, Texas in 1992 where she had worked for Allied
Signal/Wolverine Tube Division as an Inside Sales
Technician; TRW/Nelson Stud Welding Division as a Customer
Service Coordinator and Office Manager; and for Texas
Instruments as a graphic artist in their in-house print
shop/publication department.
Ms. Lewis is available to help students with their computer
problems and power point presentations, in addition to
facilitating the College of Nursing interactive video
classes. When Ms. Lewis isn’t working, she enjoys spending
time with her daughter, creating different kinds of art,
crocheting, reading, camping, fishing and enjoying the great
outdoors.
