COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
AHEC-SW BREAST CARE (ABC) EDUCATION PROGRAM

The
ABC Education Program
educates men and women on the importance of early
detection of breast cancer through monthly self-exams
and mammograms. Funding is provided by the Texarkana
Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen
for the Cure. From April 2006-March 2007, 266 women
received mammograms at
UAMS AHEC-SW; 13 were supported by
Komen funds.
CHRISTUS HEARTWATCH
The
CHRISTUS Heatwatch
program assists residents of NE Texas and SW Arkansas
with health education of concerning chronic
heart-related diseases like: diabetes, high blood
pressure, tobacco use, obesity, and asthma. The
Community Health Worker plays a vital role in educating
individuals concerning heart health. Funding is provided
by the CHRISTUS Fund out of Houston, Texas.
CHRISTUS MINORITY CARE CLINIC

The
CHRISTUS Minority Care Clinic
helps meet the needs of underserved/uninsured residents
of DeQueen, AR. Two Nurse
Practitioners, a LPN and a Community Health Worker see
patients every Saturday of the month. The clinic
provides primary basic care, helping to ease the burden
of individuals going to the Emergency Room needing only
minor care. Funding is provided by the CHRISTUS Fund out
of Houston, Texas.
FOUNDATION FOR MIDSOUTH
The
Foundation for MidSouth
program is a multi-purpose project seeking to help the
community of DeQueen, AR.
The program helps provide an additional Nurse
Practitioner for the Minority Care Clinic and utilizes
the Community Health Worker in the clinic setting. The
program also will expand medical interpreters in
southwest Arkansas through the UAMS Regional Programs
Medical Interpreting Program. An after-school program is
being established through the project to help provide a
positive place for students K-5th grade to go
and receive structured health and education programs, as
well as help with school work. Funding is provided by
the Foundation for MidSouth
out of Jackson, MS.
