COMMUNITY OUTREACH
& EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The
Community Outreach & Education Department
of UAMS AHEC-SW works to help educate
individuals about their health care and alleviate barriers,
concentrating on specific health risks and steps they can
take to avoid or reduce them. It is our goal to reach out
into our community and make a difference in the lives of our
neighbors.
We partner with community agencies such as: County Health
Departments, Local Hospitals, Clinics, as well as the
Migrant Health Centers. Primary members of the team are
Health Educators, and Community Health Workers (CHWs).
Our
Health Educators
present to civic, church, or school groups at
no charge on a specific health issue such as:
Breast Health
Care,
Sexually Transmitted Diseases,
Heart Disease,
HIV, Seizures,
Diabetes.
At the conclusion of any given presentation, time is
allotted for a question/answer period.
If you are interested in having one of our
health educators come and speak with your group about one of
the subjects listed above, or if you have another health
concern you would like addressed, please contact us at the
phone number below.
Another valuable part of our Health Team is our
Community Health Workers (CHWs).
These individuals are very active and trusted members of
their own communities. Understanding what the needs and
difficulties of their communities are, as well as what the
medical profession can offer their communities, the
CHWs
bridge this gap. The
CHWs
employed at UAMS AHEC-SW receive training in
several areas such as CPR, communication skills, and basic
health education.
The Community Outreach Department manages five grant-support
projects, and three education-related projects for UAMS AHEC-SW
(listed below).
